The Center for Infrastructure Renewal (CIR) at Texas A&M University had the privilege of hosting LTG Steven Gilland, Superintendent of the United States Military Academy at West Point; Mrs. Betsy Gilland; and Dr. Kraig Sheetz, Vice Dean for Engagement & Research at USMA, during their recent visit to Texas A&M University and the George H.W. Bush Combat Development Complex (BCDC).
As part of their time on campus, the delegation toured several of CIR’s cutting‑edge laboratories to explore the center’s advanced capabilities in infrastructure innovation. CIR researchers and staff provided an inside look at ongoing projects in materials testing, geotechnical engineering, structural health monitoring, and next‑generation construction technologies. The visitors spent time examining instrumentation, interactive demonstrations, and the large-scale experimental setups that support CIR’s mission of solving today’s most pressing infrastructure challenges.

One of the highlights of the visit was the group’s meaningful engagement with CIR students. LTG Gilland’s approachable and encouraging demeanor created a welcoming environment for students to share the motivations behind their research, discuss technical challenges, and hear thoughtful feedback from a national leader in defense and engineering education. Many students expressed appreciation for the opportunity to connect directly with the Superintendent, noting that the discussion reinforced the real-world impact of their work.
Dr. Anand Puppala and the CIR team valued the chance to showcase how Texas A&M is contributing to advancements that support both national infrastructure resilience and defense-related innovation. Visits like this strengthen collaboration between academic and military research communities and foster new possibilities for future partnerships.
