CIR Researchers Received the Engineering Genesis Award for Multidisciplinary Research

January 20, 2021 by Kathrine Bradshaw

On December 15, 2020, three (3) Center for Infrastructure Renewal (CIR) researchers and their research teams were presented with the Engineering Genesis Award for Multidisciplinary Research. This award is presented to TEES researchers who have secured significant research grants of $1 million or more. The CIR members who were received this honor included: Zachary Grasley, Amy E Martin and James Wall.

Dr. Zachary Grasley is the director of the CIR and a professor in the Civil & Environmental Engineering Department. His research focuses on the mechanics and thermodynamics of concrete and cementitious materials.

Dr. Amy E Martin is a TEES researcher and professor in the Civil & Environmental Engineering Department, who specializes in the performance and specifications of pavement materials along with finding sustainable pavement materials.

Dr. James Wall is the Executive Director of the Texas A&M Center for Applied Technologies (TCAT) and oversees the various research departments at TCAT. Dr. Wall is also involved with the Innovation Proving Ground (IPG) test and experimentation facility.

Congratulations to CIR and all TEES researchers recognized for their substantial research grants.

Puppala delivered the Ralph B. Peck Medal Lecture at the Geo-Congress 2020 Conference

November 12, 2020 by Kathrine Bradshaw

This year, Dr. Anand Puppala, Ph.D., P.E., D.GE., F.ASCE, F-ICE, gave the Ralph B. Peck Medal Lecture at the Geo-Congress 2020 Conference in Minneapolis. His lecture was titled “Problematic Soils: Characterization Challenges, Innovative Solutions and Novel Monitoring Methods.”

His lecture can be viewed in its entirety below.

Dr. Puppala’s research has been instrumental in advances in expansive soils and unsaturated soil mechanics, as well as practical implementation of soil improvement technologies for supporting transportation infrastructure. This research helps infrastructure last longer and take on less wear with their usage.

As a noted significant contributor in the field, Dr. Puppala was recognized with the Ralph B. Peck Award. “I am truly humbled and honoPuppala with Awardred to receive this distinguished award, and I attribute this success to my faculty advisors and my research team members,” Puppala said. The Ralph B. Peck Award was established by ASCE and the Geo-Institute in 1995. It is presented for outstanding contributions to the geotechnical engineering profession through the publication of

a thoughtful, carefully researched case history or histories, or the publication of recommended practices or design methodologies based on the evaluation of case histories.

Dr. Puppala serves as the associate director of the Center for Infrastructure Renewal (CIR) and conducts his research in the geotechnical laboratories, specifically soils and unbound materials labs, housed within the facility.

Pravin Saraswatula received the American Coal Ash Association Educational Foundation (ACAAEF) scholarship.

September 17, 2020 by Kathrine Bradshaw

PhD student, Saraswatula, Pravin with Dr. Mukhopadhyay’s team in the Concrete Innovation Lab at the CIR, has received the American Coal Ash Association Educational Foundation (ACAAEF) scholarship. Pravin’s essay focused on linking pore solution chemistry of concrete with CCPs to ASR potential through machine learning as a performance-based approach. The scholarship award recipients were announced in a press release on July 6th. ACAA will be recognizing the scholarship winners on their website and in their magazine, Ash at Work.

The ACAA Educational Foundation is a financially self-sustaining, not-for-profit organization which promotes the understanding of coal combustion products (CCP) management and utilization through communications and outreach initiatives that are aimed at government and industry decision makers and the public.

Pravin Saraswatula was also recently Runner Up in the PhD student category for the 2020 Keese Wootan Transportation Fellowship by Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI). This fellowship was established to honor two long-time directors of the Institute, and recognizes and rewards TTI employees who are full-time or part-time graduate students at Texas A&M University.
